Something like steam, apparently. Or ice. Whatever.

It must be catching first Andrew and now you, I suppose imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Does Sean hold the patent for this?

I get about 0.25 MJ/cu m from the numbers in that article. It's not very impressive. Pumped storage or air pressure storage gives 1 to 2 MJ/cu m under reasonable assumptions.

    Another kind of magic magnets.

These are really cool. And an actual innovation.

Looks to me like just another fabrication method for multifaceted permanent magnets. That "magic latch" could be created by laminating smaller magnets. Now, if you can create on that doesn't require the rod that keeps everything on-axis, you might have something.

Argh. I did a demonstration build of this same principle for Joe Firmage back in the ISSO days in SFO. Sixteen or so years ago now. I made a prototype that I called "switchable permanent magnet" that was about the size of a thick business card. By pressing one end, the two overlapping flat pieces (magnetized in stripes) could be slid into and out of register, allowing the external field to vary from practically zero to strong enough to pick up nuts and screws etc. I presented the prototype to Joe at his 30th birthday party ("Joe 3.0") at the Exploratorium in SFO. It disappeared into his pocket, never to be seen again.

    Sixteen years ago!

Do you still have any other version of the prototype, Al?

Sorry I'm late to the table.

So who has the magic magnets, and how can I get some?

    Now..

(ETA: Hey wow, it's sure nice to see Al is still around! Haven't heard from him in well over a year.. glad to know he's still in our midst..)

    No.

Posted By: thehardDo you still have any other version of the prototype, Al?

No, but I suppose I could construct one.

If only I had the motivation. And the tooling. And the raw materials.
