    I still prefer rotating or momex tethers.

    Especially for landing and taking stuff off the moon, a hypersonic plane could deliver cargo to an earth rotating tether and eventually people a lot quicker than a space elevator, a lot more economically as well.

    A lunar tether can easily keep station despite the moons mascons by picking up bags of dust and using that a propellant.

    Possibly a space elevator might be handy on Mars??

    Basically same problem. If the tether dips far enough into the atmosphere for the plane to fly then it will lose a lot of momentum. If you make it so heavy that won't matter it will be very expensive.

    Virgin space plane can get to sixty miles by using speed, admittedly rocket powered but a scramjet plus a rocket could climb above most of the atmosphere.
