    Well, if they're empty inside, then all their mass is in the shell, meaning that inside is zero field which means a whole lot of real estate at zero gee

    Doesn't the infalling observer get a lethal sunburn from the blueshift when all the radiation that will ever fall in arrives on top of him in a bunch? Why does the mass have to be a property of the surface? Why can't it be a property of tbe bent space?. Is there a difference anyway?
