Amok is a culture-bound mental disorder associated with Malay culture in which a sense of lost honour causes someone to go on a killing rampage.

Berserk was a killing rampage perhaps associated with stress of war in ancient Norse culture. The "banzai charge" might have been a similar thing in Japanese culture.

So maybe the focus on weapons isn't the best way to approach the USan problem of rampage killings. Maybe these too are a culture-bound mental illness and the culture itself would have to change. A hard sell to its members who appear to hold US culture as the pinnacle of human experience and are enthusiastic proselytisers.

Rage can be viewed as a natural mental state, right along with happiness.

Amok is not just rage. Nor, ftm, is "active shooter".

Fix wut? That's what I'm asking. Are there just too many guns down there or are you all nuts?

My point was: sort of both. The nuts are way way way in the minority. The problem is that one nut with one AR-15, large magazines and lots of ammo can wreak a lot of slaughter, all by him or herself. Banning the AR-15 style assault weapons may help a little but an ordinary police type service pistol perhaps with help from a shotgun or two can wreak havoc as well. And with all the guns already in the wild, it will always be easy to buy illegal weapons in the USA, at least for many decades after good legislation is implemented, which is improbable and at the very least extremely difficult.

So look for more slaughter to come. And probably, not just in the US.

Soft targets with lots of people abound everywhere, sadly. I don't know the answer. I am not sure there is one. It's worth trying to make the risk less though.

A " culture-bound mental disorder" involves the whole culture, i.e. all of you. The concept is recognised - DSM lists amok as a  culture-bound mental disorder. So if that can be endemic to Malay culture why could not US culture have a  culture-bound mental disorder?

Posted By: maryyugoI don't know the answer. I am not sure there is one.
Of course there is an answer! In fact there are several. There is just no perfect answer that would instantly fix everything. But there are lots of things that you could and should do to reduce your violent crime rates and change your toxic gun culture. eg:

    1. Tax wealth in order to redistribute it more equitably, shore up your badly under-resourced public services, reduce your grotesque wealth and income inequality, and thereby reduce the socio economic problems that are well known and understood to lead to increased violent crime rates.

    2. Repeal the second amendment. Restrict gun and ammunition ownership. Ban gun shows. Ban private gun sales. Ban gun sales online, from grocery stores, and from pretty much everywhere except for highly regulated and restricted specialist gun shops. Disband the NRA and declare it a terrorist organisation / cult. Declare an amnesty to allow everyone the opportunity to get rid of their guns with no questions asked and then consistently and diligently enforce the new laws restricting gun and ammunition ownership.

    3. Challenge the current gun culture that romanticises, glamorises and glorifies gun violence by showing the full horrors of actual gun violence. Challenge the NRA’s lies by hammering home just how futile it normally is for normal law abiding citizens to try to take the law in their own trembling hands by attempting to use guns to protect themselves from criminals instead of relying on the police for their protection from said criminals.

    Etc. Etc. Etc.

Nothing would instantly fix everything, but everything would help and gradually things would improve. Continuing to do nothing about it will merely serve to facilitate the continued deterioration of the worsening situation that you are currently failing to recognise, failing to come to terms with, and failing to deal with.

What I am suggesting above would help, but I never said that it would be easy. Difficult is not impossible. Difficult can be done. Remember the in-joke on Obama’s desk: “Hard things are hard.” ...

The real one, outside the myth of individual omnipotence.

ETA I find MY's comment really distressing. It is tantamount to saying there is no hope for the USA, and that would be a great loss.

    Vision. Will. Leadership. Hard work.

That’s what it would take to make things better.

By comparison, doing nothing seems easier, but that is a delusion. It only seems easier up until the point when get to you experience the consequences for yourself.
