    Aha!
    Finally I have caught Sabine in an error!

    It is quite true that the sort of 3-D pictures you see on greeting cards and book covers are not holograms. They capture some discrete values of lateral parallax only and use a lensing method. They are called parallax panoramagrams.

    But the little shiny item on your credit card or plastic money is different. It is truly a hologram of a particularly ingenious type (called the "rainbow hologram") invented by a guy called Steve Benton, alas now dead. The two unique things* about rainbow holograms are that they can be reconstructed in white light, and they can be encoded by variations in the height of a surface, hence by embossing them on plastic. (Or even chocolate, as was suggested in one of the early papers.)

    But other than that I am heartened to learn that since our universe doesn't have an anti-deSitter boundary the whole "universe is a hologram" business is just mathematical wanking.

    *Actually not quite unique but certainly unique in combination.
