    That’s not right you know. After trying to investigate some terribly shoddy and dangerous manufacturing coming out of China over the years, it appears to me that at the local level at least, China can be pretty chaotic.

    Not clear exactly what you are replying to but "locally chaotic" is not incompatible with overarching state control (nor is chaos at any level). Also, can you factor out that the appearance that things are more chaotic than they are, serves the purpose of making your investigations diffcult or impossible.

    What became clear to us is that there are plenty of factories set up despite the attempts by the central authority to regulate it-there’s lots of backyard businesses, and lots of graft and grift. We had one case where it turned out that the factory we thought was making the crucial bolts for some cranes was being used as a postal address by some dodgy fellow who was having the bolts (which were a very poor imitation of the original samples) delivered there from who knows where and then shipped on to Australia. I’ve seen that sort of thing several times over the years, including in one very unfortunate case involving an exercise bike seat and a lady who ended up with a very unpleasant injury. I think the central government turns a bit of a blind eye to what goes on sometimes-maybe through bribery down the line as you say. I just don’t think there’s as much control over that economy as some may think.

  3. Yes - and it's worth pointing out specifically that an accumulation of wealth may be a monopoly by itself if it gives one individual or group the ability to prevent others from action. There must be a limit on the accumulation of financial power by individuals (and corporations if you insist on treating them like {privileged} individuals).

    It cannot happen peacefully without the consent of the super-wealthy power-wielding elites.

    We would first need to convince enough of them to act against their own short-term self-interests and to willingly surrender some of their grip on some of their power.

    That mere facts that:
    1. it would benefit all of us, including them, in the longer-term for them to do so;
    2. that the current unsustainable path they have put us all on leads to ruin for all of us, including them; and
    3. that the other alternatives are a lot worse, for all of us, including them

    might not be sufficiently motivating for them to agree...

    Peasants' Revolts tend to not end well for the vast majority of the peasants, so where does that leave us?

    That's hardly unusual, let alone weird.

    Ahead of the rally, the Des Moines Register released a poll which showed that 53% of Iowans view Trump favourably.

    45% of Yanks are batshit insane, except in Iowa.
