Jolly good show, not bad for a colonial start up.

I'm not aware that Oregon was anybody's colony, just the settling ground for invaders.

Correct. It was part of the disputed Hudson's Bay Co. lands under the name Oregon Country, but was never a colony of Britain.

And if Polk had had his way, you'd be living in the US now.

One reason I am no fan of Polk, unlike my nephew who took the republican shilling and became a USan. He was trying to tell me that Polk was his idea of a very successful US president.

But if the Colonial Office had had any balls through the nineteenth century, you'd be a Canadian now, and so would Sarah Palin. One has to be careful what one wishes for.

Heh! The reason why we generally use air heatpumps here is that a heat loop in the ground depends on water percolating around tl bring in more heat. It's fairly easy to freeze the groundwater, after which the heat pump stops pumping.

I recall talking with the heat pump people when we installed a new unit a couple of years back.

The sentiment seemed to be that if you're willing to go to the expense of drilling deep well or if you have a lake on your property, then the geothermal systems work fine. Otherwise, not so much--and ground movement can be very expensive.

Yup. But even a well could freeze in the wrong formation. I have an air-air pump, works fine with an electric boost now and then. But they're not practical in most of the country.
