On the other hand, you'll have plenty of vitamin D.

No word about the costs. Can it produce for 4 cents per kWh like offshore wind? Meltdown gets new meaning.

I imagine that nuclear regulations would throw a wet blanket on this on all but third-world nations. To be sure, there are shipboard nuclear power plants, but they're all military.

As long as it comes close to 4 cents per kilowatt hour it's constituency should make it a winner.

Cause when the wind don't blow.

We need as much fossil fuel free energy as possible to save the planet.

    Save the planet?

Until it's engulfed by the sun, it'll still be here. The climate is a different story--we may be well past the tipping point.

We can send you some ordinary winter to try out first. You might not like it.

Sometimes I feel the urge to cycle to Calais and fart into that tunnel.

Of course not, even I am (or want to see myself as) not that stupid.

    History-ignorant writers.

A "thorium" reactor doesn't use thorium as the fissionable material--it adds a neutron and creates U-233, which is then fissioned.

The first MSR employing this was back in the 1960s

So China is not the first by more than 50 years. The move to FBRs and uranium fuel was largely a political decision.

    It should produce less waste.
