    Interesting. Preforms are normally made by a process that amounts to burning gaseous silicon compounds. That way you get chemically pure silica soot, and it's the purity that counts for low attenuation. I am wondering how they maintain that.

    I don't understand the remark about asymmetry. Can be done already.
