Posted By: AngusWhat fun there is on YouTube! Here is the grand daddy of the Ophicleide - theSerpent. A find for me - I have never actually heard one played before. It doesn't disappoint. All the keyed brass instruments are fine farters. Probably the reason they all disappeared until modern times and a new generation of people insane enough to learn how to play them again for reviving old music.

( You have to sit through four and a half minutes of a tambour solo first.)

Oh, that was fun! I have visions of PVC Serpents..... thanks! And the tambour solo isn't all bad, it fits with the rest of the piece.

All guns should be illegal to the general public. They serve no other actual purpose than to kill living beings.

Some living beings are called wild animals and in a rural setting a gun is appropriate.

In most urban settings personal firearms make little sense.

Not rural - wild. And you don't need an assault rifle with a hundred round magazine.

We manage round here , where there are bears and mountain lions who come into the towns, with an unarmed population that just calls the authorities when necessary.

You obviously did not see how big that rabbit was before he started charging!

And what are you going to do when the bears with their flouride protected teeth decide that you have been hoarding the maple syrup?

No idea if this belongs here.

Hot on the heels of the #hashtag #omnishambles - initially descriptive of the UK governments performance, but now more generally used for pervasive incompetence, - we have #romneyshambles

    Hehehe.

The man is a joke. If he manages to get elected, it won't be a very funny one.

I really don't understand how any young persons growing up in the USA over the past 20 years can have any confidence in the national electoral process at all. You have buffoons running against snooffubs and the best liar always wins... and it turns out that there wasn't really any difference between the buffoons and the snooffubs at all anyway, lather rinse repeat every two, four and six years.

I can only imagine two members of the Illuminati watching George W Bush and one saying "he must be the worst president ever", while the other, with a glint in his eye, pulls a mobile from his pocket, dials Romney's number and replies "wanna bet?".

    How else could he happen?

@Al. I don't think the UK is any better. We have three significant political parties, who used to represent the political left, the centre and the right. Now 'New Labour' formerly the socialist left - has moved so far to the right that their policies match the governing 'Conservative' right-wing ruling coalition's almost exactly. Any real differences are mostly just rhetoric.

As for the Liberals - they are truly the squeezed middle. Desperate to hang onto the tidbits they gain by being part of the ruling coalition they have abandoned all of their pre-election promises in return for the maple syrup of government.

A bunch of unimaginative and incompetent lying toerags, the lot of them.

Posted By: alsetalokinYet Brevik, with a very high score and an impressive k/w ratio, was both certifiably mentally ill, possessed his licenced weapons legally, and lived in a place with very extremely strict gun control.

Which proves that no rules have exceptions except this one, I suppose.

Yet the problem remains, and as long as small arms _primers_ are available to all and sundry, semiautomatic slugthrowers will be with us. The primer is the high-tech chokepoint that requires major infrastructure to manufacture and distribute. You can melt down old batteries for bullets, make your own gunpowder out of cave scrapings and burnt animal bones, recycle cartridge brass indefinitely, file out semiautomatic handguns from billets of metal stock by hand.... but if you do not have consistent primers you can forget about all the rest of it working reliably, or at all.

Until some querulous monkey comes up with a semiautomatic flintlock, that is.

I disagree on the primers. Gunpowder (or similar) will ignite if pinch impacted. Remember playing with a cap gun as a kid??

The mass shootings list must be biased because an event happened in Colorado just months before the theater shooting. A killer was stopped after shooting one person and before shooting another in a church.

Posted By: ping1400Mass shooters generally don't expect to survive. They don't care at all about others with conceiled weapons.
Then why do they select gun free zones?
An incident in Texas where a nut drove his truck into a restaurant and opened fire on the patrons resulted in the suing of the restaurant by a woman whose parents were killed. She had left her gun in her truck to abide by the sign that declared no concealed carry allowed.

Posted By: AngusWhich all avoids the actual issue - that the easy legal availability of weapons, compounded with a truly morbid kind of firearms machismo, makes for the easy illegal availability - wrong place, wrong gun, etc. And that is not only a USA problem but has become one in Canada and Mexico (though I don't know if government-smuggled weapons should actually be considered illegal.) So US conceptions of personal freedom are killing people who have no say in the matter, as well as the eight times more USans than should be getting killed in a country with such a standard of living.
Blaming the gun. Switzerland is a true gun culture that does not have the drug culture or the problems of the US. Eventually those drug problems will expand to Canada and you will find that all those gun laws will protect no one.

I tend to agree with Al on this. Sure, it's easy to knock up improvised percussion caps or some mixture you can put in a recycled primer which will sort of work, 2 times out of 3. Fine for a 'zip' gun or even a revolver I suppose. Not so much in a mag fed semi auto. You'll spend a lot of time clearing jams and cleaning crap out of the worky bits.
