Posted By: LoonymanI've said this befor, and no doubt will again, and I know correlation is not causation, but the US having such fucking lame gun laws, and the US having such a massive death rate by fire arm compared to the civilised world ARE related.
The US has laws against murder. They consider murder as a serious crime. They also have laws against murder with a firearm. Commit murder with a firearm and now you are in real serious trouble.
And once again. DC has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the US yet has the highest murder by gun. Would you like to repeat the correlation and causation statement again?
Nova, care to quote the number of felons in jail for drug crimes?
    <http://www.druglibrary.org/Schaffer/library/basicfax17.htm>
59.6% of the prison population are there for drug offenses. What is not stated is the prison population for robbery of 9.8%, how many of those were robbing to support a drug habit?
If someone commits robbery for whatever reason, then arrest them for that crime. Putting people in prison because they do stupid things to themselves that may motivate them to commit crimes is stupid. Certain religious beliefs could predispose one more to some crimes than others. We don't throw every Catholic priest in jail because they might bugger a kid, even though raping children is a much more serious crime than robbing someone's home.

The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing the greatest amount of free meals and food stamps ever.

Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us to "Please Do Not Feed the Animals." Their stated reason for the policy is because the animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves.

    This ends today's lesson.
Nova, there is validity to the point that straight hand-outs do invite dependency. But there is also an issue of whether it is moral to allow children to starve.

I agree, I call many drug laws as victimless crimes. Carrying a gun is a victimless crime in many areas. It certainly is in Canada.

Bigoted stupidity is not a crime ... and it is not victimless either.

there is more poverty because the government pays for poverty. You get what you pay for.

The only way out of poverty is through education and opportunity. Creating harsher conditions for the victims of poverty doesn't help. It just slams the doors of opportunity shut for future generations.

I think having lots of guns is stupid. Guns are accelerants. In a tense situation stress impairs clear thinking. Adding accelerants to the situation won't make that better. The answer to: intimidation is not to gun people down in the streets. The answer to crime is better policing.

perhaps we should cull weaker members of the herd as well? or is it sufficient to just sterilize them?

How about doing nothing. Or is that a new concept?

Creating harsher conditions? The occupy wallstreet gang created harsher conditions by trying to destroy the wealth of the US. Doing nothing does not create harsher conditions.

No one will stop you from giving to the poor. Making a claim that others should be compelled to give to the poor is what I find morally wrong.

Legalising crack and heroin would probably massively drop the murder rate over night. Good luck to any US politician who proposes that though, the voting public don't always like logical policies.

I hate drugs. It can bring down a nation. But....what is the solution to an addicted population.

//o< there is nothing new under the sun

but i'm not sure "nothing" is possible. For one thing, someone's going to have to hire all those newly self-rehabilitated good citizens who suddenly want to earn their keep.

or, from the sound of your observations, someone might have to help them somehow overcome their inherited flaws so that they will be able to make the right decisions, stop having kids if they can't afford them, etc.

Or do you have an example of a place where doing nothing has resulted in the poor getting their shit together motivated only by hunger and lack of money and with no help?

There have been quite a few victims recently here in Canada of the crime of carrying a gun. Many of these victims would likely be alive today if we didn't share a border with the USA and its unaccounted-for arsenal.

There is no gun problem in the USA and the solution to poverty is to shoot the poor.
