While living with Tibetans I was told about their version of judicial punishment - public shaming. The guilty have to roam the streets begging while carrying chains to mark them out. It's not unique (in England the stocks in the square were not uncommon - people could throw rotten fruit at you) but nowadays people are locked away in prisons. I think the public way is better.

But this form of public humiliation is out of hand. This grim and humourless mob mentality isn't what it should be about.

It's mob mentality alright but not grim and humourless. People do it for the lulz. And like the stocks it can do far more damage than they individually intend.

For any Wolf Hall fans: Henry VIII granted Oakham to Thomas Cromwell in 1531 under the old title of the castle, lordship and manor. The Buttercross and stocks date from around 1570.

We drove to Oakham on a Sunday several times when I was young. Of course, my Dad always locked us up in the stocks. We'd go to see the horsehoes and visit the courthouse, where we had mock trials.

Actually old style Nokias (known as 'Nan-phones' in Essex) are coming back into fashion here. I never gave mine up!
