The double slit, single photon result has always really, really bothered me. I had never really tied it to Many Worlds before. As Joe remarks "With what exactly does it interfere?"
Going from physics to engineering was doubtless for the best.
Well, that's just the point, isn't it? The twist given to this interpretation by Many Worlds is what I highlighted. The interference is between the different "worlds".
There is only one world, one territory. The map is not the territory. Many different maps can describe the same territory, more or less accurately, more or less suited for some immediate purpose. A map that describes one part of the territory accurately may not be accurate when describing a different part of the territory. Here be shoals, and they are really there and will hole your hull. There be dragons... but are they really there, and is their breath but wind and fog?

Heh... you say that like you don't believe in One World. Yet there is no evidence for any other, despite the fearsome dragons depicted on the margins of your favourite map.
But we still don't really know what a wavefunction is! Or a bunch of other things, like electrical charge for example. Or why the latter should be relativistically invariant.
