Could be--isn't the human genome composed of about 8% viral material?

Also, with viruses we may wind up with no cell nuclei, or even no we.
  3.
That's right. Never take your nuclei for granted.

Gives nuclear war a whole new meaning.

A hitherto missing link in the food chain. What eats viruses?

Seems that these things have access to both viruses and bits of cellular detritus. There can't be a lot of energy available from a virus - it has no metabolism.

I believe these protists have DNA so at least they get a source of raw materials.

More like vitamins for protists than food, then.

Isn't evolution biased to take shortcuts and promote degeneration without external selective processes and - overall a lazy ass bastard?

Evolution isn't biased or planned or programmed or intended or whatever. Evolution is another name for "what happens".

Except dogs. And corn. And wheat. And people.

(Selective pressure deliberately applied results in wide variation in phenotype with definite goals in mind. For some reason they call this "husbandry". Dentistry and plastic surgery deliberately remove selective pressures and apply different ones. Evolution is what happens, but selective breeding is "what happens if I do this" and keep doing it to generations of offspring.)

Surely, so is everything from "physics" to "thinking". You need to cross into Unicorn territory to get away from "what happens" but even then, the materialists (Hi Sabine!) will tell us that is essentially just "what happens". If there are no strong emergent behaviours, it is all just "what happens".

I've yet to experience what happens as what didn't happen.

Religions, delusions, psychoses, popular movements and quite a bit of scientific speculation are often based on what didn't happen.

99.9999% of what we call 'reality' is based on what didn't happen and doesn't ever happen. Yet our view of it is what it is. And of course we are what we are. Whatever that is.
