To what real end? Will anything interesting be learned by humans that can't be discovered by unmanned probes? Is Mars a great place to grow weed? Any "colonists" will likely be condemned to a life underground.

You're quite right in pointing to the fact that exploration is not for everybody. But this is about robotics which should be an essential component of building a permanent presence on Mars. Otherwise it will really be too hard. And I'm pointing out that we simply don't yet have the tech to throw at the problem.

Posted By: Andrew PalfreymanColour me underwhelmed for the possibility of robots humans setting up infrastructure on Mars, if that shower is in any way representative of the state of the art.

    FIFY

Robots don't need O2, water or food. Which is an advantage in an environment that doesn't have these resources. They also don't mind the odd dose of ionizing radiation.

NASA is teaching Boston Dynamics' creepy robot dog, Spot, how to explore caves on Mars so it can look for signs of life.

Maybe we can look forward to the Automated Olympics. Should reduce the doping scandals anyway.

You clearly have never heard of overclocking

That's illegal? Do you have to overclock the gravity as well?

Nice, make them dust proof and send them to the moon.

...and they're going to send a bunch of them to colonize Mars?

    They will colonize walmart first.

I expect at least a Moonwalk from Primus Subpar next year.
Since the worst jobs are begging, hanging around, chilling and collecting DOSENPFAND the overall performance criteria for this first generation of TESLAbots should be pretty moderate.

There are plans to use robotic dogs to carry extra air and tools for the Lunar astronauts, I don't see why the robots can't be ridden as well.

China claims they can make their robotic dog fifty times cheaper than Boston dynamics for about
$1,500 that's cheaper then a pony with less upkeep.

Could be safer as well if it doesn't do it's hand stands.

Soon all your young grand daughters will be demanding one.

The electric rodeo, you read it here first.

If we can get Angus to try it we might finally find out what he hides under his kilt.

    That's worthy of Daedalus!
Just think - no more roads paving over the good cropland. Just picturesque trails. Everybody fit and healthy from the outdoor exercise, thighs of steel. Perhaps we could even organise a hunt.

Incidentally do you wear anything under your kilt?

As I do have some Scottish ancestors, I don't want to catch a cold at my age.
