I still remember reading the New Scientist article about the laser a brilliant new invention waiting for a use.

Early lasers were expensive and temperamental. That limited immediate application. You had essentially the pulsed ruby laser and the low-power continuous helium-neon laser. The semiconductor laser was the breakthrough device that made the technology practical for application. It was the state of technology that limited application, not the concept.

I recall a demonstration application of the ruby laser as an eraser for a typewriter. The black ink would absorb the energy and be vaporized, while the white paper reflected much of it.

One forgets the high power excimer gas lasers that made some companies rich in the 1970s. And CO2 which filled the sort of manufacturing/weapons role now handled in solid state.

Does it contain any CO2, or has that frozen out?

We're failing at terraforming Earth. Mars is going to be much harder.
  2.
I beg to differ. The utter lack of humans on Mars currently means that there is no possibility to make it worse!
