    When I think of beauty in transportation, it's not the shinkansen that first springs to mind, nor the Concorde, but the visceral experience of witnessing the onrush of the Palantine Express right under my feet on the little bridge on Aylestone Lane, billowing massive clouds of black smoke and gleaming green and brassy gold. By the time it had reached Wigston from Leicester, it had achieved almost top speed on its way to London, and the din was thunderous.
