This morning I heard a northern flicker pecking away at a pine snag just outside my window. Since the snag is the result of a winter storm, there hasn't been much activity at all with the wood still full of sap. This evening, the flicker showed up again to continue where it left off (same place on the tree). Within about 10 minutes it was joined by two large downy woodpeckers.

Which makes me wonder if woodpeckers use the flickers to find good food sources...

It would make sense. Isn't there a species of bird that shows bears where beehives are so that they will be able to get to the bee larvae after the bears have destroyed the hives and the adult bees have abandoned them? Also, crows and seagulls certainly follow and mob each other if they find food.

An interesting paper on flickers that will certainly anger some religious fundies.

Oh, and I misspoke in the original post. These are not downy, but "hairy"/Pileated woodpeckers. They were back bright and early this morning. It's amazing how much material they can excavate in a short time. I could scarcely do better with a chisel and hammer.

All you experienced chaps have probably been through something like this. The morning after a brief encounter of the nice kind, I was handed a phone number and told to call so long as I didn't mind sharing with two others.

    Bummer.

Depending on your tastes, of course.

Though I guess the comment applies either way.

Not a problem. Anything about nature that fundies don't like can easily be blamed on The Fall and Satan introducing sin into the ecosystem, so to speak.

Some would say that before the fall animals did not have to kill each other to survive, for example. Disease can be blamed on Satan and man's fall, and pretty much all those bad things that happen to good people.

And when the sky fairy's kingdom is restored "the lion will lie down with the lamb" (which also sounds like something the fundies might have trouble with, but I guess in heaven anything goes!).

Just look at it as another opportunity to excel, and don't forget to wear your flak jacket. So to speak.

(I would also limit the discussions of combinatorial mathematics while in the presence of the nice encounteree.)

My eyes weren't fooling me--1 flicker, 2 pileated, 1 hairy on the tree today. Before Monday, nothing, ever.

    Really interesting.

At the next "encounter" you had to bring two "friends"?, or share the phone number, like chain phone number??

Hmm, I`d be checking for hidden cameras in this situation. (not I`d ever be in said situation). :)
