I have less of a problem with associating some deity with the big stuff around us - earth, sky, sea, etc. - than I do with the assignment of their progeny. A son or a daughter - why? And how do the names get selected?

Bards, troubadours, skalds, tellers of tales. Good names are their business.

    Names are important.
"Skald" is a new one for me. It was a silly question. Science fiction writers make up names all the time.
And the whole pantheon thing is basically story telling.
I realised recently that I may get through my entire life without anyone having asked me "Are you the Keymaster?"

    Are you the Keymaster?

ETA: No, I am not the Gatekeeper.
Well, one more thing to check off the bucket list.

The GateKeeper and the Keymaster must have some wild parties.
    Ocean. Spoon. Time
It's a good thing that reality is not predicated upon our understanding of it

I can see you are not an adherent of the Strong Anthropic Principle.
I'm here because the Universe permits it, not the other way around.

    No Anthropicists here, it seems.
Gentlemen, please do not conflate existence with the understanding thereof

    Cogito ergo sum.
And the universe does not give a tinker's

It's pretty hard to do much of the latter, unless you have the former well in hand.

Circular and question-begging. Rather, the TKartesian formula goes "It thinks... therefore it thinks I am."
I like that a whole lot better

    Makes no sense
    "It thinks" is ok.
But why does it follow that the it that thinks must think I am?

    How about

"There is that which thinks which thinks it is me, I think"
If an alien mothership suddenly appeared and hovered low over some minor country - say Spain - what would really happen?

I think we'd try radio and optical comms first. Then we'd try to land on it and enter.
