The brains trust of the Pentagon says it is just months away from producing a jet fuel from algae for the same cost as its fossil-fuel equivalent.

The claim, which comes from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa) that helped to develop the internet and satellite navigation systems, has taken industry insiders by surprise. A cheap, low-carbon fuel would not only help the US military, the nation's single largest consumer of energy, to wean itself off its oil addiction, but would also hold the promise of low-carbon driving and flying for all.

Who cares, when Orbo is just about ready to go commercial?

It might be good to have some alternatives in the works, just in case Steorn is a slightly delayed.

Well sane, rational people who are capable of critical thinking for a start, which of course would rule out a lot of Steorn believers and apologists!

ETA: And phrases like "just about ready to" and "soon" tend to have somewhat disastrous consequences in military applications! ;)

Robert Rapier writes a good blog on energy related stuff, his take on this Algal Oil for $2 a Gallon?

Algae oil is a bit like OU, always "soon". Even though extracting oil from algae is technically quite easy in the lab, making it commercially viable is a lot harder.

Yeah, Orbo will go commercial right after Mark Goldes' gets his breakthrough device on the market real soon in 20000000000000000000000000000.

I think the Pentagon better watch out for the BigOil MiB. If they are smart, they will pull a Steorn and demonstrate the new technology in a way that convinces all but the wackos that they are incompetent, full-o-shit boobs that really don't have what they claim to have. This way BigOil/MiB will leave them alone. [That is, until it is too late. Then the pentagon and all those that signed up to believe now will laugh and laugh and laugh and laugh!]
